Gajar ka halwa, otherwise known as gajrela, is a Pakistani dessert. This immensely popular and super delicious classic Pakistani sweet is traditionally served at weddings and special occasions. This showstopper dessert never fails to impress. Garnish with chopped nuts and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream!

  • 1 kg Carrots/Gajar peeled and grated
  • 120 g Granulated Sugar
  • 200 ml Milk/Doodh
  • 50 g Butter
  • Nuts, e.g. cashews, almonds, pistachips optional


  • In a saucepan melt the butter on low heat until completely melted
  • Add the grated carrots then cook on medium heat for 15-17 minutes until softened, ensuring that you stir every few minutes so that the carrots do not stick to the pan
  • Pour in the milk then reduce the heat to low before covering with a lid and cook for 10 minutes, stirring every few minutes
  • Add the sugar and cook for 2-3 minutes
  • Add your preferred chopped nuts to the mixture
  • Your gajar ka halwa is ready!
