DAILY DOSE OF DEEN: Avoid backbiting
اَعُوْذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْمِ
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمن الرَّحِيْمِ
Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaathu everyone!
The subject of pride originates from the beginning when Allah (سبحانه وتعلي) created Prophet Adam (عليه السلام). Most people know this story and know that when Allah (سبحانه وتعلي) commanded all of the angels and jinns to prostrate to Prophet Adam (عليه السلام) Iblis refused to and defied a direct command from Allah (سبحانه وتعلي). He said that he was superior to Prophet Adam (عليه السلام) as he was created from fire whereas Prophet Adam (عليه السلام) was created from clay. Allah (سبحانه وتعلي) banished Iblis from the heavens and in response Iblis said that he would spend his time leading everyone astray.
So, what is pride defined as? Pride is when one considers others to be inferior to themselves. In Islam modesty is very much loved by Allah (سبحانه وتعلي). Pride can often prevent people from thinking about their own sins and make think that they are perfect. This means that they would not suffer repentance for all of their shortcomings and hinder them from becoming better Muslims. Pride is a disease and is considered to be a great sin in Islam. An authentic Hadith found in Tirmidhi reports that the Prophet Muhammad (صلي الله عليه واله وسلم) said,
“The one who has even a mustard seeds wight of pride/arrogance in his/her heart will not enter Paradise.”– Prophet Muhammad (صلي الله عليه واله وسلم)
If you do not know how small a mustard seed is then they are about 1-2mm in diameter. So, if we even have that much pride in our heart, we will not be able to enter Paradise. We should always keep this in mind if we do not want to displease Allah (سبحانه وتعلي). Often people that have a lot of pride are unable to accept their wrongdoings. They do not see the harm that they cause other people. Pride fuels many other negative traits such as anger, disrespect and rudeness amongst others.
There are different levels of pride. People can display pride in front of other people or in front of Allah (سبحانه وتعلي). Pride in terms of people is kind of self-explanatory. It is when people see that they are better than others. They think that their wealth, knowledge, beauty or other aspects of their lives makes them better and superior. Pride with respect in front of Allah (سبحانه وتعلي) is when people do not offer their Salah and do not give thanks to Allah (سبحانه وتعلي) for all that they have been given. They start thinking that they are deserving of all the things that they have been given when in reality Allah (سبحانه وتعلي) can easily take just as they can give.
We should always remember that when all is said and done, we are all going to be buried in the ground and not a single one of us can escape death. Death is the only certainty in life and no amount of money or beauty, or power will ever be able to change that. We should give thanks to Allah (سبحانه وتعلي) for all that we have and humble ourselves.
